For private renters in England only. Guidance only, not legal advice.

About RentersExpert

RentersExpert helps private renters in England check a rent increase notice and decide, with the facts in front of them, whether to challenge it at the tribunal themselves.

What we do

What we do not do

We are not solicitors and we are not a law firm. We give general guidance, not legal advice about your situation. We never act for you: we do not fill in, sign, send or file anything for you, we do not contact the tribunal or your landlord on your behalf and we cannot represent you. You stay in charge of your own case.

For advice about your own situation, contact Shelter, Citizens Advice or a law centre. Their help is free.

England only

The rules on this site are for private assured tenancies in England. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different laws on renting. Housing association and council tenancies have different rules too.

How we check the rules

Every rule comes from the Housing Act 1988 as amended by the Renters' Rights Act 2025, the regulations made under it, the official forms and GOV.UK guidance. We link to the source next to each rule and show the date we last checked it. The checker follows fixed rules taken from the law: the same answers always give the same result, and your answers stay in your browser.

If you spot a mistake, please tell us.

Who runs it

RentersExpert is run by Karol Slusarczyk, a sole trader based in England. It is an independent site. It is not part of the government, the tribunal, Shelter or Citizens Advice.

How the site is paid for

The checker and the guides are free. The paid Rent Challenge Pack (£34.99) puts a tenant's own facts into the MR1's order, with covering letters and a guide to their dates, so they can check, sign and send their own application.
